this country will never move beyond the idea of race so long as our government is in the business of race. what do you think? check all that apply:
  • white
  • black
  • other

"Our belief of life, liberty and he pursuit of happiness, for example come into conflict with our growing awareness of unfair and unequal treatment afforded blacks and other people of color" (Howard, 93-94).

As our culture progresses we need to move away from ideas such as "white is right, black is wrong," "white power," or "black power." As a global community we need to empower everybody, regardless of the color of their skin.

  1. Is the government only responsible for the social construction of race?

  2. No, I don't think that the government is the sole constructor of race. I think that everyone constructs race/identity/origin. I think that for example when we get to know the people that surround us we don't look at them as black or white but by their actual origin. That is one thing that the government does not do. This would only be true for Latino's, Hispanic's, or people of Spanish origin.

  3. I agree- I don't see the government as the sole construct or race- the institutions foster and develop this construct but it's people that by into it and further it. The bystanders that allow this construct to continue without acknowledging that there is a level of bias in all of us as equally responsible for the continuation of race as a social construct.
